A new experience in Cambridge
Here’s a first. Had dinner tonight with a colleague at the Cambridge Chop House.
Empty restaurant, save for 3 young people in a fairly heated discussion. Our waiter seems a good guy, doesn’t even want to charge me for substituting mushroom for carrots. Conversation is flowing, then this idiot comes over from behind the counter and in his Cambridge-esque superiority voice remarks “Gents, can you please clean up the language, I’ve heard you swear a few times now”.
As I write this I feel like exploding. What an absolute f****** p****. I haven’t been talked to like that since I was at school and some silly housewife-come-teacher told me off for saying ‘damn’ or something suitably trivial.
What I’m more annoyed about is my British conditioning that makes me take this sort of shit. With a delayed reaction I wish I had gotten up and left. Although I did in some ways get a degree of revenge by ensuring that my US colleague didn’t leave any tip (I think the first time he had ever done that).
The downside of the new payment terminals is that you don’t have to write anything anymore. If there was where there was the space for ‘Tip’ I’d have written “DON’T BE AN ASSHOLE”.
Another one to add to the banned list…
